The Basics of Building Muscles

For the body to repair and grow lean muscle, whilst also supporting a variety of other biological processes (hormone production, neurotransmitter synthesis, hair, skin & nail growth, immune function) the body is firstly provided amino acids and BCAAs from protein.

The Basics of Building Muscles

The body is continually in an ongoing cycle of both building new proteins (anabolism) and breaking protein down (catabolism). This delicate balance between anabolism and catabolism is ultimately the determining factor as to whether your gaining muscle. And to understand this simply your body needs to have anabolism that is is exceeding its catabolism.

In less scientific words, your body has to build more protein (muscle) than it is breaking down over that time. And it needs to maintain a net anabolic state for a prolonged period of time (weeks, months, years), in order for you to build muscle.

How do I achieve this? The answer is to this is actually simple. To promote an enviornment where your body is building up more protein than its breaking down each is day is to perform resistance training and to consume enough protein each day.

This dynamic duo is the key to maintaining an anabolic environment. And it can be further supported by the introduction of carbohydrates into your body. Carbohydrates increase insulin in the body, which creates a powerful anti-catabolic effects in the body. So by combing all of these variables you are setting yourself up for success if your goal is to maximise your muscle building potential.
