Digestive Health Daily Routines

I don’t think there can be any debate that providing your body with the right nourishment aids its performance so of course, it makes sense that would go for drinks as well as food. Here are a few things to consider when trying to incorporate a daily hydration routine into your life.

Drinking lemon water in the morning before eating is a great way to aid good digestion for the entire day. When we add lemon juice into warm/hot water the citrus is used by the body as a digestive aid, an anti-inflammatory, and a diuretic. Lemons are packed full of vitamin C which is great for your immune system so starting your day with this is kickstarting digestion, flushing out toxins, and even cleansing your liver and your skin. The science is in on this one but please go and read for yourself about this wonderful brew.

Digestive Health Daily Routines

Staying hydrated throughout the whole day can be challenging but the benefits are worth it. We have some ideas like “Flavoured water” that can help you keep things interesting and we recommend you get a bottle and get used to carrying it everywhere with you its fantastic for a healthy digestive tract. Check out these tips below:

Water

Proclaimed to be nature’s digestive aid, water is a major component of every single cell that lines your digestive tract, meaning you need plenty of it for those cells to function. Water also keeps tissues in your digestive tract pliable while creating an environment that allows food to easily pass, especially when combined with fiber. A good guide to determine your total daily water intake, (in litres) per day = Your Weight (in Kg) multiplied by 0.033. For example, if you are 60kg, you should drink about 2 litres of water every single day. At 90kg, you'll need around about 3 litres of water. Be sure that you drink more water when sweating during exercise or working outdoors in hot temperatures as your body dehydrates quicker at these times. WATER, WATER, WATER.

Kombucha

Made by fermenting yeasts and bacteria with sweetened tea, kombucha is a refreshing, lightly carbonated drink that is rich in probiotics. Probiotics are healthy, live bacteria that help the gut to run smoothly. The health benefits of probiotics are numerous and amazing, boosting your immune system, improving blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and improving overall gut and digestive health. Give it a try, available ready to drink in stores.

Peppermint Tea

The magic of peppermint has been used for thousands of years for its pleasant, minty taste and health benefits. It contains natural chemicals that may help the digestive tract by reducing spasms in the gut, meaning your body is more relaxed and can more easily digest food. This has led to its widespread use as an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Coffee

If you are anything like us, you are reaching for the coffee before you have even opened your eyes in the mornings. Well, the good news is your morning brew can help with more than providing you a much-needed energy boost, it can also act as a stimulant for your digestive tract. Functioning like a laxative, coffee gets things moving quickly in your gut and although it may seem perfect helping with your daily bowel movement before you head out the door, you shouldn’t rely solely on it to help with digestion. Excessive amounts of caffeine may cause diarrhea, which is not only uncomfortable but may also prevent your body from absorbing certain important nutrients. Too much caffeine has been shown to hinder sleep, so it is best to avoid drinking coffee after 3 pm.

Ginger Tea

Drinking warm ginger tea just before or during a big meal can improve digestive health and prevent heartburn, stomach ache, and indigestion. This is because the root stimulates saliva flow, bile, and gastric juice production, which jump-starts the breakdown of the food you eat.
